About this trip

A long weekend that gets the balance right. Two days in Hampi, which is a fourteenth-century imperial capital scattered across a boulder field and is one of the strangest, best places in India — sunrise from Matanga hill, the Vittala temple's stone chariot, and a coracle across the river to the quieter side. Then three hours west to Gokarna, where the plan is deliberately that there is no plan: Kudle and Om beaches, a cliff walk between them, and a hammock.

  • Sunrise from Matanga hill over the whole Hampi boulder field
  • The Vittala temple complex and its musical stone pillars
  • A coracle ride across the Tungabhadra at sunset
  • The Gokarna cliff walk between Kudle and Om beaches
  • Cycling the Hampi ruins, which is by far the best way to see them
