Singapore: City & Islands

The easiest first trip abroad there is — four nights, no language barrier, and a metro that goes everywhere.

About this trip

Singapore does the work for you: everything is close, everything runs on time, and you can cross the whole country on a train in under an hour. Four nights covers Marina Bay and the Gardens, the hawker centres that are the real reason to come, a day on Sentosa, and the neighbourhoods — Little India, Chinatown, Kampong Glam — that are what people remember once the skyline photographs are taken. A good first passport stamp for anyone nervous about travelling abroad, and the one trip on this page where nobody needs telling how to get back to the hotel.

  • Gardens by the Bay and the Supertree light show after dark
  • The Marina Bay Sands skypark, and the waterfront walk under it
  • A hawker centre dinner — Maxwell or Lau Pa Sat, on the group vote
  • A day on Sentosa, cable car both ways
  • Little India, Chinatown and Kampong Glam on foot
  • The night safari, for the one evening nobody wants to walk

Day by day

5 days, written by the host who runs it.

Day 1Arrive Singapore

Airport pick-up and check-in. Evening at Marina Bay for the waterfront and the light show, and a first hawker-centre dinner.

Day 2Gardens and the bay

Gardens by the Bay in the morning — both conservatories — and the Marina Bay Sands skypark. Afternoon free, and the night safari after dinner.

Day 3Sentosa

Cable car across to Sentosa for the day. Beaches, the boardwalk and whichever attractions the group picks, back in the city for the evening.

Day 4The neighbourhoods

Little India, Kampong Glam and Chinatown on foot and by MRT, which is how this city is best seen. Last dinner together.

Day 5Out

Breakfast, then airport drop. Anyone extending to Malaysia gets help arranging it.

Where you sleep, how you move

Stay

A four-star hotel in Bugis or Clarke Quay, on the MRT and walkable to a hawker centre. Air-conditioned with attached bathrooms. Twin sharing; a private room is ₹24,000 for the trip. Rooms in Singapore are small — that is the city, not the hotel.

Transport

Airport transfers by private coach, and the MRT for everything else on a pass we hand you on day one. It is genuinely the fastest way around and it is how you will want to do it.

What to carry

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond travel, plus two photocopies
  • Printed visa or e-visa approval, and your travel insurance certificate
  • A universal travel adaptor
  • Some local currency for day one; cards work for most things after that
  • Layers appropriate to the season — see the trip overview
  • A reusable water bottle and personal medication

Who this trip is for

Open to 18 and over. There is a lot of walking and it is humid all year, but nothing on this itinerary is difficult.
